Dental Implants Preserve Your Jawbone

Every time you bite down, the roots of your teeth stimulate your jaw tissue, keeping it healthy and strong. When you lose teeth, your jawbone loses that source of stimulation and begins to atrophy. This can cause your remaining teeth to shift, as well as additional tooth loss and changes to your facial appearance.

Dental implant posts act just like the roots of your teeth, providing jaw stimulation and preventing deterioration. They support restorations that withstand the force of your bite just as well as teeth, without any shifting or slippage. Your implant denture can be shaped and shaded to give your smile a completely natural look.

Placing a Dental Implant Requires Sufficient Jaw Tissue

Because missing teeth cause jaw deterioration, you may not be an immediate candidate for dental implants. However, there are procedures to rebuild the strength of your jaw. Our Bloomington dentists can perform a bone graft or sinus lift to establish a stable foundation for your dental implants.

The Denture Implants Timeline

We offer multiple sedation options to keep your experience as relaxing as possible.
We offer multiple sedation options to keep your experience as relaxing as possible.

Preparing for Surgery

You may need treatment for an underlying dental issue, like tooth decay or gum disease, before you can receive dental implants. If we identify that you lack sufficient jaw tissue to support dental implants, you'll need to undergo a bone graft or sinus lift before implant surgery.

Placing the Implants

An oral surgeon will anchor a series of dental implant posts into your jawbone. Implant placement can often be performed with just local anesthesia, but if dental work makes you especially nervous, ask about sedation options for a worry-free experience.

Healing Period

It generally takes between three to six months for dental implants to fuse with the jawbone.

Placing the Abutments

Once you've healed from implant placement, you'll be ready to receive your abutments. These small pieces fit on top of implant posts and form the connection between implants and restorations.

Second Healing Period

The healing period after abutment placement is much shorter—usually just a couple of weeks.

Creating the Denture

Return to our office in Bloomington so we can take impressions for your denture. We'll send the impressions to MicroDental Laboratories, our trusted partner for over 40 years. Their technicians will create an incredibly lifelike denture with the ideal look and fit for your smile, using acrylic and resin-style materials with a lifelike appearance.

Placing the Denture

It will take about three to four weeks to complete your denture. Once it's ready, return to Wyse Family & Cosmetic Dentistry one last time so we can fit your restoration to your implants. Your dentist will make any necessary adjustments to ensure your bite is comfortable and stable.
